How to Add Downloads to a Page with the Download Listing Block
The new Download Listing block lets you show a group of downloads neatly on a page.
It works well for school trip packs, workshop resources, menus or any set of files you want to keep organised and easy for visitors to find. Each download shows its file size, and the layout stays consistent and scales to mobile automatically.
Before you start
Upload your files to the Media area first. We recommend creating a new folder for them so everything stays together and is easy to find later.
Step by step
- Add the block. On your page, click the plus icon to add a block, then search for "download". Choose Download Listing Section. You'll see a preview of how it looks.
- Name your section. Give it a title (for example, "Educational Resources") and add a short intro if you'd like one. Click Create, then publish.
- Add a download listing. Open the section and add a download listing inside it. You can add more than one listing to a section. For example, you could have one for Key Stage 1 and another for Key Stage 2.
- Add your files. Open the listing and choose to add a download listing item. Give the file a name (this is what visitors will see), then select the file from the Media area. Click Create. Repeat for each file.
- Publish and preview. You'll see your title, intro and downloads, each with its file size.
Making your downloads stand out
By default, the listing flows naturally with the rest of your page content. This works well on longer pages where the downloads sit between other text.
If you'd like them to stand out more:
- Open the download listing itself (not the section) and click the cog icon.
- Turn on the option to make it a panel.
- Choose a panel colour if you'd like one. The colour options were set up with you when your site was built, so you may see choices like light, dark, primary or secondary.
- Click Submit.
The panel option and the colour option work together, so turn on the panel first. You can use several panels on one page, or several listings within one panel.
The main block settings (such as hiding spacing) are also there, and they work the same way as on every other block.
Tips
- Upload files to the Media area before you build the listing, as it saves going back and forth.
- Use separate listings to split up large sets of files, such as by age group or topic.
- Keep file names clear and short so visitors know exactly what they're downloading.
